Closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras can be an essential part of a security system—their placement matters to be appropriately effective. The right height and angle give you the necessary visuals to respond to an unexpected event and monitor employees for safety.

BearCom is a trusted provider of video surveillance systems and software. We have over 75 locations and 40 years of experience working with businesses that require CCTV cameras.

We want to share some guidance on correctly placing CCTV cameras to ensure they’re most effective.

Common CCTV Camera Locations

There are common locations where CCTV cameras are placed in facilities across industries, such as:

  • Entrances/exits
  • Parking lots
  • Loading docks and manufacturing floors
  • Secluded areas
  • Customer interaction points

Choose locations based on specific security needs. For example, secluded areas and parking lots can be locations where employees may be vulnerable. A security camera can allow someone to monitor these locations and respond if someone needs help.

BearCom offers a range of CCTV camera solutions tailored to fit various locations. Our teams can also conduct site walks to determine where security cameras should be placed. Our turn-key installation and maintenance plans can ensure your systems function as they should.

CCTV Camera Heights

The right camera height can be essential in capturing clear and helpful footage. CCTV cameras must be high enough to see everything and avoid tampering.

The ideal height of your camera may depend on the location. Entrance ways often have eye-level cameras, while larger spaces, like manufacturing floors, require higher angles.

Generally, the most common installation heights range between 7.5 and 18 feet.  7.5 feet is better for close-range views of an area, while higher options show you more of the room, as you have a wider angle.

CCTV Camera Angles

Camera angles can impact how much of a space you can see. Cameras installed at a high vantage point should be angled downward. This allows for a focus on objects within view. The downward angle can also provide a broader idea of what’s happening in the space.

In addition to camera angles, the right lens can maximize coverage. Smaller lenses are better for increasing viewing angles, though they decrease the depth of field. Larger lenses increase depth but reduce viewing angles.

BearCom has a range of security cameras available with adjustable angles, such as:

  • Dome cameras
  • Pan-tilt-zoom cameras
  • Fisheye cameras

BearCom also offers advanced footage analytics software to help you get the most out of your footage. The software Avigilon Appearance Search™ can help you search footage for a threat based on a description.
